The construction of the ten-bedded hospital at Dramedtse in Monggar is expected to be ready by end of this month. The construction was supposed to be completed by mid of last year but the COVID-19 pandemic delayed it. However, it will be fully operational by next year as the district has proposed additional human resources.

Currently, people of Dramedtse avail themselves of the health services from this Primary Health Centre.

The centre has six staff, including a health assistant, nurses and other support staff.

For services such as eye and dental checkups, ultrasound and x-ray, residents have to travel either to Monggar or Trashigang hospital.

“When we go to Monggar hospital in a bolero, we have to spend Nu 6,000. If the patient is not in critical condition, the hospital does not admit us. When we calculate all the expenses, it is costly. It incurs less expenditure when we go to Trashigang hospital. But if we can get the services from here, it will benefit us,” said Tshomo, a resident.

“The new hospital will provide x-ray and ultrasound services. The hospital will have nurses who will take care of the patients. We will provide services 24/7,” said Dungchu Wangdi, Health Assistant.

The construction of the hospital and the two-storied doctor’s quarters began in February 2021 and was supposed to be completed by the end of August last year.

According to Dramedtse Gewog Engineer Thinley Wangchuk, the contract period was extended for six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

And an additional two months’ extension was given because of some additional construction works at the site which were not included in the initial project.

Meanwhile, officials from the Dramedtse Gewog Administration say they have been monitoring the site to complete it on time.

“The district administration including the Dzongda and engineers are monitoring the site. From the Gewog Administration side, we also monitor and submit reports to the district administration. After completion of the hospital, it will not only benefit Dramedtse Gewog but also the people of Narang and Balam Gewog,” said Yeshey, Dramedtse Gup.

Once complete, this two-storied hospital will also have eye, dental and laboratory services.

The hospital will have 13 staff including two doctors.

The Government of India under the Small Development Project is funding the work worth more than Nu 30 M.
