Residents of Pelrithang Khatoed in Sarpang have been longing for a bridge over the Dawla stream for quite some time now. If constructed, the bridge will connect school-going children of Pelrithang Khatoed with the Pelrithang Higher Secondary School. The Gelephu Gup proposed the need for the suspension bridge during the recently held Dzongkhag Tshogdu.

Dawla stream usually remains completely dry when there is no rainfall. But it starts to swell during continuous shower especially with the onset of the monsoon making it impossible for people to cross.

The stream poses danger, especially for the students of lower classes of Pelrtihang Higher Secondary School. The school has classes starting from PP to XII. There were instances of the children even missing classes during monsoon unable to cross the stream.

Raising concerns over the safety of the school-going children, the Gelephu Gup called for the need for a suspension bridge over the stream during the Dzongkhag Tshogdu.

“While talking to the teachers, we came to learn that they had to do away with classes during monsoon when students were not able to come to school due to the swollen Dawla stream. Therefore, on behalf of the people of Gelephu, the gewog administration would like to request for a suspension bridge over Dawla stream,” said Prem Prasad Katel, Gelephu Gup.

Sapang Dzongda directed the house to hold the bridge construction proposal until the plan of the upcoming mega city in Gelephu is finalized.

“Gelephu Gewog is located in the centre of the Mega City Development project in Sarpang district is confirmed. If we raise the concerns when the planners carry out work for the project, there might be a solution,” said Lobzang Dorji, Sarpang Dzongda.

Dawla stream is almost five hundred metres from Pelrithang Higher Secondary School. Of over 1000 students, more than 300 are from Pelrtihangkhatoed.
