After exactly three months and 10 days, Gasa Dzongkhag finally opened to traffic today. The Dzongkhag was cut off from rest of the country after flash floods and landslides on June 20 washed away roads and two bridges.

The new bridge at Getana was formally inaugurated today.

Many people BBS spoke to said they are glad that their lives will finally return to normal. “We are happy,” they said.

The Department of Roads is still clearing the little leftover blocks. However, they said, the works are far from finished. The department has begun formation cutting at Gendygang. They are yet to start building walls, lay gravels and built a base course of the road.

The Department of Roads’ Assistant Engineer, Palden Wangchuk, said they have built a retaining wall for Getana 1 Bridge for time being. The cost to built the gabion wall came up to Nu.200,000.

“The other bridge will take time to be built. In the meantime we are using stone which are covered with mud and sand for the smooth flow of traffic,” said Palden Wangchuk.
