If everything goes as planned, the vegetable vendors in Samdrup Jongkhar will be able to sell their products from an integrated vegetable market shed from August this year. For now, the construction of the shed is in full swing. According to Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde administration, about 65 per cent of work is completed.

The new integrated vegetable shed is being constructed in the Samdrup Jongkhar Maed constituency.

These days, the workers are busy plastering. The partition works are also ongoing. According to the contractor, they will start the roofing works from next month.

With the ongoing construction works, the Thromde provided a temporary space to the vegetable vendors at Tendelthang, which is located near the town. There are 21 vendors.

They said it will be convenient if the construction works are completed at the earliest.

“We are facing inconveniences. When it rains, the rainwater seeps inside. Moreover, we don’t have enough storage facilities out here,” said Dema, a vegetable vendor.

“We would be grateful if the new vegetable shed is completed at the earliest. Out here, we don’t get customers since people visit bordering towns to buy vegetables. I think customers will come when we operate from the new vegetable shed since it is located in the town. It is an extra hassle for the customers when we operate the business from here,” said Choney Wangmo, another vegetable vendor.

According to the contractor, they are trying to complete the work on time although the work progress was affected by the pandemic.

The construction of the shed started towards the end of 2021.

The integrated vegetable shed is being constructed at a cost of Nu 65 M.

Once complete, it will have separate spaces for locally grown vegetables and imported ones. The shed will also have a meat shop, florist shop and food court among others.
