Kopor residents in Samdrup Jongkhar to soon have sufficient drinking water

The drinking water shortage facing the residents of Kopor village at Dewathang Gewog in Samdrup Jongkhar will soon be solved.  The villagers are constructing new water distribution lines and tanks with support from the district administration and the Dewathang Gewog Administration.

Of the 39 households, 20 in the lower part of the Kopor village are facing difficulty in getting sufficient water. Storing water in drums has become an everyday task whenever they receive water.

Residents say water is not sufficient since both the upper and lower villages share the same water distribution lines and tanks connected to the Rangrong stream.

“As we share distribution lines and tank, when we release the water here, there is no supply to the lower part of the village. We managed the water supply here by ourselves from a small stream and it is not enough. Taps provided by the government do not receive any water,” said Dorji Dema, a resident of Kopor village.

“Whatever we do in the village, we need water. If there is enough water we can maintain cleanliness, and can also cultivate vegetables,” said Nawang Chenzom another resident of the village.

However, their problem is likely to resolve soon as the construction of separate water tanks and distribution lines to the lower village is ongoing at a cost of more than Nu 1 M.

Once complete, lower Kopor village will get a water tank with a capacity of 4000 litres, a thousand-litre water distribution tank, and close to three-kilometre-long pipelines.

The villagers are executing the water supply construction works. The Gewog Administration is supplying materials while the district administration is providing technical support. The gewog administration expects to complete the works within June this year.
