In commemoration of His Majesty the King’s 43rd birthday, the Jigme Singye Wangchuck (JSW) School of Law in Paro launched its Climate Change and Environmental Law Centre today. Her Royal Highness Princess Sonam Dechan Wangchuck, who is the president of the school and who pioneered the project graced the launch. The centre is part of a five-year climate change project of the JSW School of Law.

Along with the launch of the Climate Change and Environmental Law Centre, its strategic paper 2023-2030 was also launched. As per the plan, the school will offer Master of Laws and the environmental clinic will start by 2024.

A lecturer at the JSW School of Law, Tshering Dolkar says the environmental clinic can give services to the people and communities in need of legal advice and aid on environmental laws.

The centre plans to conduct a biennial international climate conference like the Paro Forum, which is underway at the law school.

Tshering Dolkar said policy makers, climate scientists, youth, and foreign officials working in NGOs will be brought together during the conference to brainstorm decisions regarding climate change and how we can give climate justice to countries like Bhutan.

The project aims to provide quality education and research on sustainability, environment, law, and climate justice.

It will also strengthen coordination among local, regional, and international partners. The centre will provide legal and policy advisory services to ensure its financial sustainability.

The Karuna Foundation and The Asia Foundation is funding the project.
