Lyonchhoen addresses UN General Assembly

Lyonchhoen Jigmi Y Thinley addressed the 67th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Friday morning.

In his address during the General Debate segment, he highlighted the challenges faced by the world. Lyonchhoen then, informed the Assembly that the Resolution on Happiness, which was adopted last year, led Bhutan to host a High-Level Meeting on Wellbeing and Happiness on 2nd April this year.

He further informed that pursuant to recommendation from the High-Level Meeting, His Majesty the King has established International Expert Working Groups, comprising of about 50 experts to elaborate on the four themes of well-being and happiness, which are ecological sustainability, fair distribution, and the efficient use of resources. The work of the International Expert Working Groups will be presented for consideration by the 68th and 69th sessions of the United Nations General Assembly in 2013 and 2014, respectively.

Lyonchhoen also had bilateral meetings with the Asst. Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, the Vice Chancellor and Foreign Minister of Austria, and the Foreign Minister of Cyprus.

Meanwhile on Monday, Lyonchhoen is scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the Conference of the Forum of Small States Conference organised by the Permanent Mission of Singapore to mark its 20th Anniversary.

The theme of address is on “Small States and their Drive to Development”.
