In the last two years, festivals across the country were celebrated as closed-door events. People could not attend it in person. But after the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions, Tshechus across the country are starting to draw huge gatherings. Even in Zhemgang, a local Tshechu has attracted over 500 people this year.
“Chodpala” is one of the most important festivals for the people of Khengrignamsum. It is held from the 14th to 16th of the tenth month of the Bhutanese calendar.
Some spectators this time came from places as far as Thimphu.
The Tshechu is performed in the courtyard of Goshing Lhakhang in Zhemgang.
“The Covid-19 pandemic has subsided. Moreover, after resuming Tshechus, we expect timely rainfall and good luck. And we hope that will bring prosperity to the village,” said Rinchen Lethro, a resident.
“I am happy today and I expect the same next year,” said Gyeltshen, another resident.
During the three-day annual Tshechu, villagers perform mask dances and cultural programmes.
They also make an offering to local deities.
“The villagers cannot afford to travel far away to attend such festivals. So, we are attending the Tshechu to receive blessings,” said Zangpo, a resident.
“If we don’t conduct this annual Tshechu every year, the culture might disappear,” said Rinchen Lethro.
Tshechus are conducted to celebrate the glorious heritage, culture and traditions of the country.
