Tens of thouands of people gathered to witness the annual Lhamoi Dromchoe which began at the courtyard to Tashichhodzong in Thimphu today. The festival showcases some of the sacred dances dedicated to the protecting deity of Bhutan, Palden Lhamo.
The Dromchoe was first introduced by Kuenga Gyeltshen in 1710. Kuenga Gyeltshen was recognised as the reincarnation of Jampel Dorji, son of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel.
According to the Bhutanese calendar, Dromchoe is celebrated three days earlier to Thimphu Tshechu.
