Shingnyer farm road damaged

The farm road in Shingnyer village in Ura gewog under Bumthang has been damaged in several places after private contractors used heavy vehicles and earth moving machines to supply constructions materials. They have been supplying the construction materials to their ongoing construction site of Nangar-Ura highway for over a year now.

The farm road was constructed about a decade ago.

A farmer of Shingnyer, Lhawang Tshering, said the condition of the road is so bad that even the taxi drivers refuse to come. The road has over the year turned muddy and slippery.  “Dangerous for small vehicle,” said another farmer, Pelden Dorji.

As a measure to stop the road for further deteriorating, the village tshogpa had put up a gate disallowing big vehicles to ply through. But later, upon the agreement, between the tshogpa and the contractors, the gate was done away with. “Since the contractors have no other way to transport construction materials to the site they had to use the farm road,” said Tshogpa Ugyen.

According to the agreement among them, the contractors will repair the road once they are done with constructing the highway.

An agreement has been signed between the people of Shingnyer village and the contractors which say the farm road will be repaired by the contractors after the new highway is completed.

The construction of Nangar-Ura highway resumed in February 2011. It is scheduled to be complete by June next year.
