Cycling and walking in Gelephu have become much safer. The recently completed track is located about a kilometre from the town. It is constructed in the woods away from the heavy traffic of the town.

The new trail may not be as serene as the Trans Bhutan Trail but it is serving the same purpose for the residents in Gelephu. Stretching 1.6 kilometres in the Teak forest area, the trail is already attracting people of all ages to walk and cycle. The forest not only provides cool shades, but it also shelters visitors from the dangers of city life.

“There is no risk of accidents here. It is very cool and safe because all the bushes were cleared and we could have a good view. In the past, some youth used to hang around in this forest and involve themselves in unhealthy practices. Now the new facility is benefiting everyone from children to old people,” said KB Tamang, in Gelephu.

“This was initiated for a good cause. Now we don’t have to be under the scorching sun when we get time to take a walk or just relax,” added Samten, also a resident.

The Gelephu Thromde has identified about 50 acres of land covered in teak trees to develop as City Central Park. The project is estimated to cost Nu 1.5bn. With limited funding to implement the project in a go, the thromde has constructed the bicycle track and jogging trail in the first phase.
