A part of the Dzongkhalum Bridge collapsed yesterday while a trailer carrying a crane was crossing the bridge. Dzongkhalum Bridge is about 11 kilometres away from Trongsa towards Zhemgang.
The 22 metres long bridge which was built in 1990 has a carrying capacity of 18 metric tons.
The Executive Engineer from the Department of Roads, Hom Raj Ghalley, said both the trailer and the crane are stuck in the middle of the collapsed bridge. He said they are expecting a bigger crane to pull out the stuck crane and the trailer.
The collapse of the bridge has also affected the traffic. Passenger buses plying from Bumthang, Trongsa, Zhemgang and Gelephu will come to a halt as there are no other bypass routes to reach these destinations from Trongsa.
Hom Raj Ghalley said it will take another two weeks for the bridge to be repaired.
