National Statistics Bureau (NSB) is an inch closer in developing a consolidated framework using an environmental statistics and accounting tool. The framework is expected to help determine the health of environment in the changing socio-economic activities and human well-being.

The Environmental Statistics and Accounting tool is widely used in the national accounts as an indicator that report on the state of environment. Information includes such as income from natural resources, pollution, environmental degradation emission and depletion of natural resources among others.

The Chief Adviser with Statistics Denmark, Ole Gravgard Pedersen said such tools help influence decision making and information dissemination and ultimately lead to proper management of resources.

“Environment statistics and account are tools to inform people and policy makers to create awareness about the environment and preservation of environment.”

He said NSB which mandates to develop a strong and reliable national databank, said the tool is timely and apt especially as the country move in to balance inclusive green socio-economic development.

“We have been talking a lot about our environment, we are known as one of the hotspots for biodiversity. And also our eleventh plan is a green plan, which is about environment,” said NSB’s Director General, Kuenga Tshering. That is why, Kuenga Tshering, said NSB thought environment accounting system should be initiated.
