School closed after 233 students fell sick

Chargharey Lower Secondary School in Samtse remained closed today after 233 students suffered from Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) like symptoms. The students were suffering from dry cough, chills and were shivering. More than 244 students had complained about some illness. While 233 students had ARI like symptoms, the rest were suffering from stomach ache and diarrhoea.

The School’s Principal, Sherab Gyeltshen, said 78 students fell sick on August 30. He immediately asked the teachers to report to him the number of students who were absent. The school found out that 20 students were absent taking the number of sick students to 98.

The school immediately sent for the Health Assistant. The Health Assistant after collecting samples called the doctor. The doctor verified the result as negative and that the students were suffering from seasonal flu.

Sherab Gyaltshen said all the students who had fallen sick are recovering. He said today only 10 students turned for up medication at the temporary dispensary they have built for such emergencies.
