Residents of Korphu Gewog in Trongsa are hoping for a public bus service in their gewog to ease their lives. Today, having to travel outside the gewog is inconvenient and expensive.
The Gewog is located about 125 kilometres away from Trongsa town. Since the gewog is far, residents face problems in availing themselves of public transportation.
People who don’t own a car hire bolero while some wait for the bus that travels from Zhemgang to Thimphu via Trongsa. There are 800 residents in the Gewog.
“We have many boleros and other vehicles in the village. But those who don’t own a car cannot afford the fare,” said Gempo Dorji, Korphu Maed Tshogpa.
“Cash crops such as rice, maize and cardamom are grown here. So, if there is a public transport service, marketing will be easier. Moreover, we can generate income,” said Rinchen Phuntsho, a resident.
“We would be happy if there is a bus service once or twice in a week or a month,” said Jambay Dorji, another resident.
However, according to the gewog administration and the Road Safety and Transport Authority, they need to carry out feasibility studies before starting the service.
Until then, it seems the villagers will have to manage with the taxis or wait for buses on the highway.
