CNN has listed Tergo-La Trek among 23 of the best hiking trails in the world. It was announced yesterday in a CNN Travel series, Monthly Ticket, that spotlights some of the most fascinating topics in the travel world.

Tergo-La Trek located in Haa is one of the country’s lesser-known routes. The altitude ranges from 3,500 metres to 4,150 metres, covering terrain varying from farmland tracks, to forest trails and mountain paths, with views of Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. It takes an hour’s drive to reach the Tergo-La trek from Haa town.

According to Blue Poppy tours and trek, they decided to use the Tergo-La trek for a specific promotion as it is quite remote and not many tour operators use that trek.

Blue Poppy Tours, a travel agent based in Thimphu submitted the trail for publication. According to the travel agent, they decided to use the Tergo-La trek for a specific promotion as it is quite remote and not used by many tour operators.

‘‘CNN decided to promote or publish the top 23 best places to visit around the world. And, fortunately, Tergo-La has caught their imagination and they have published Tergo-La as one of the best places to hike in the world,’’ said Choki Dorji, Managing Director of Blue Poppy Tours and Treks.

According to the Tourism Council of Bhutan, Tergo-La is part of the Nub Tsonapata trek. It is a five-day trek and it is best to trek in the spring and fall seasons. They added it is good news for Bhutan as it is one of the top 23 trekking routes in the world.

‘‘Anytime we get this kind of publicity, it is very good for Bhutan as well as Bhutanese Tour operators and also Bhutan tourism industry. For example, we had an enquiry from another country to share about the Tergo-La trek so that they can promote it in their country. It means a lot for Blue Poppy as well as for the country and Tourism industry in Bhutan,” added Choki Dorji.

According to the Tourism Council, every year about 200 people trek the Tergo-La trail including domestic trekkers. There are 49 approved trekking routes in Bhutan.
