Promoting local food products

Towards enhancing and promoting the local food products in the country, a 40-year-old man in Lobesa has come up with a biscuit manufacturing plant. The unit produces two types of biscuits that are made by using more than five varieties of homegrown cereals. The local biscuits hit the market this month.

Currently, the manufacturing unit has hired an expert from India to train the people here. The biscuit manufacturing unit is expected to create job opportunities for the people. Currently, four staff including the trainer operates the production.

“We have hired one trainer from India for a few months here. He is providing the training to our people. He is training from operating machines to basic maintenance works,” said Tshering Dorji, the owner of the manufacturing plant.

Like all businesses, the owner is worried about finding a market for his locally produced biscuits. He said the government can find ways to promote locally produced goods and empower aspiring entrepreneurs.

“For instance, it would be of great help if the government can urge the civil servants to replace the imported snacks with Druk Organic biscuits at official functions such as dinners, meetings and workshops. This can help us,” added Tshering Dorji.

The biscuit manufacturing plant was established with Nu 3.2 M.

Currently, there are three local biscuit manufacturing plants registered with the Bhutan Agriculture and Food Regulatory Authority.
