The Ministry of Health and the Tourism Council of Bhutan are working together to introduce Sowa Rigpa spa and Wellness Services, an indigenous treatment method in the country. The abundance of medicinal plants in the country is seen as a potential powerhouse for health and economic opportunities.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Health Minister, Zangley Dukpa, who recently returned from a trip to Lingzhi said high altitude medicinal plants are found in other regions too. But Lingzhi has the largest number of medicinal plant species that can be sustainably harvested.

Lyonpo Zangley Dukpa said given the abundance of a wide variety of herbs in the country, the health Ministry will now focus on establishing Sowa Rigpa Spa and Wellness Services, an indigenous treatment method.

“The works are already underway in developing services standards, guidelines and regulations for Sowa Rigpa spa services in the country.  The services will be later provided to the private spa resorts, centres and hotels.”

The initiative is expected to not only promote and sustain the practice of traditional medicine but also brand Bhutan as a unique spa destination for the high end tourists.
