There are many tailoring shops in Gelephu that sew Bhutanese attire. But when it comes to western outfits, residents have to go to tailors living across the border before the pandemic hit the country. But today, the Ministry of Labour and Human Resources is providing a month-long training on tailoring western garments to Bhutanese tailors. This is expected to help them earn their livelihood and enhance creativity.

From measurement to designing and stitching, 20 tailors are learning to make fieldwork uniforms from scratch. They started learning the skills at the beginning of this month.

Once the tailors have mastered the sewing skills and knowledge of tailoring uniforms and other western outfits, it is expected to meet the increasing demand in the market.

With additional skills, the participants are hopeful of diversifying their customers.,

“Most of the tailoring shops sew Gho and Kira. And we didn’t get such kind of training till now. This training I think will help us,” said Tashi Dema, one of the participants.

“There are 20 participants. We are confident that we can meet the demand in Sarpang,” said Tashi Tenzin, another participant.

The training will end on Saturday. Similar kinds of training were provided in other districts as well.
