PM meets Iranian President

The Prime Minister Jigmi Y. Thinley met with the President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, soon after arriving in Tehran, the capital city of Iran, yesterday. Lyonchhoen is in Tehran to attend the 16th summit of the Non Aligned Movement (NAM).

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad welcomed the Bhutanese delegation to Iran and thanked Lyonchhoen for accepting his invitation to attend the summit. He said that Bhutan’s participation will contribute towards advancing the goals and Strategies of the Movement in the future and strengthen cooperation among the NAM member states.

Lyonchhoen expressed appreciation and congratulated Iran for hosting this important summit and conveyed the greetings from the people of Bhutan. He thanked Iran’s leadership and noted that the preparation for the summit have proceeded smoothly.

The President spoke of the commonalities between Bhutan and Iran and said both the nations seek to promote peace, justice and compassion in the world. The two leaders also spoke on the good relations between the two countries.

The 16th Summit of NAM with the theme “Lasting peace through Joint Global Governance” began today, with an address by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

On the sidelines of the summit, Lyonchhoen will also have a series of bilateral meetings with the heads of states and governments and other delegation leaders.
