Minjey GC road in need of maintenance

It was about five years ago that the people of Minjey Gewog in Lhuentse were thrilled to have their Gewog Centre road blacktopped. Today, the GC road has become a nuisance for the people. Most parts of the road require improvement works.

The drains along the eight-kilometre Gewog Centre road are blocked with debris and grasses. And during the rainy days, the stormwater flows out onto the road.

According to the residents, this has worn off the road which has developed several potholes. The road was blacktopped in 2017.

“The stormwater has damaged the gewog centre road and no one is repairing it. We do not know whether the gewog administration or the Gup and Mangmi should look into the matter,” said Choni Dorji, a resident.

“We are not sure whether it is due to a lack of proper drainage system or due to heavy vehicles plying on the road. The road has developed several potholes now.  So, it causes inconvenience to us while travelling to Lhuentse and Monggar. We would be grateful if the government repairs the road,” said Yonten Gyatsho, another resident.

According to Minjey Gup Jigme Tenzin Zangpo, the gewog administration clears the drains twice a year but it still gets clogged.

The gup said the issue was discussed during the recent Gewog Tshogde. But he added that the resurfacing works could not be carried out in the present five-year plan due to a lack of budget and that it will be carried out in the next five-year plan.

Until then, people of 270 households in Minjey Gewog will have to manage with the bumpy road.
