Livestock officials of Wangdue Phodrang are treating an unclaimed injured calf at Phobjikha Gewog. The calf was reportedly attacked by vultures. According to local leaders in the gewog, there is a risk that this large bird will also attack school-going children. They said the number of vultures in the area has now increased to about 60 from just some 25 a few years ago.

The Phobjikha Mangmi said this is the first time that vultures attacked a living animal in the area. Vultures are known to only feed on dead animals.

He also said there is a growing threat to human lives with the increasing number of feral dogs in the area. He claims that increasing stray cattle and horses in the area is attracting more predators.
