The Election Commission of Bhutan will conduct the election for the vacant demkhongs next month. According to the Commission, there are 24 demkhongs in ten districts without Tshogpas. The vacant demkhongs either had no candidates or a few lone candidates secured NO votes during the recent LG election.

The vacant demkhongs include each from Haa, Lhuentse, Monggar, Sarpang and Trongsa, two from Wangdue Phodrang, and three each from Paro and Samdrup Jongkhar, five from Pema Gatshel and six from Thimphu.

The election will be held on May 5 and the voters will choose their chiwog or thromde Tshogpas.

Meanwhile, in light of the prevailing COVID-19 situation, the ECB is extending the postal ballot facility to all the eligible voters residing outside the demkhongs. The postal ballot registration also started today.

However, if there is no candidate after the last date for filing of nomination, the election will be postponed until further notice.
