The Pangbang Dungkhag Court in Zhemgang today sentenced 36-year-old Neten Wangchuk to life imprisonment for the statutory rape of his nine-year-old stepdaughter. He has to pay Nu 45,000 as compensation to the victim.
The Dungkhag Court also sentenced 38-year-old Sangay Gyeltshen to five and a half years in prison. He was convicted of attempted rape of the minor. He is the landlord of the house where the nine-year-old girl lives. He also has to pay a compensation of over Nu 26,000.
The two men were convicted in separate incidents. Both men were arrested by the police in November last year.
The incident came to light after the girl complained to her mother of pain while urinating. The mother then took the child to the hospital and reported the case to the police.
