When it comes to roads in the country, the alignment and the quality are often being questioned. One such road is the Gewog center road in Sergithang Gewog in Tsirang. For many years, residents have been asking relevant authorities to improve and maintain the Gewog centre road. Only a few days ago, the gewog administration started realigning the road in some areas.

A car usually takes almost 20 minutes to cross the steep and bumpy stretch below the Tashithang chiwog.

“The road condition along this stretch has become worst now. Once, I had to carry my sick mother on my back while returning from Damphu hospital since my vehicle couldn’t climb up,” said Tara Nidi Sanyasi, a driver.

The Sergithang Gewog administration has started realigning the stretch from Friday. The Gup said, the realignment work, which comes around a half-kilometre, is one of his pledges.

“The Gewog administration has given three months contract duration. This is because there is a rock in between. But the contractor informed the gewog that the works will be over within one to two months,” said Phub Dorji, Sergithang Gup.

However, the commuters want the Gewog administration to resurface the entire 12-kilometre road. They say the road in many places has deteriorated and caused several accidents.

“Last time, my brother had an accident here due to horrible road condition. Even bolero pickups are having a tough time crossing this stretch. In summer we can’t use the road,” said Tara Nidi Sanyasi.

“The problem is very serious. Three vehicles got into accidents. When it rains, only four-wheel-drive can ply along the stretches. The rest of the drivers park their cars near the stream and walk,” said San Man Subba, a driver.

The Gup said the resurfacing works will be prioritised in the 13th Five Year Plan. More than 300 households in the gewog use the road.
