The Gylpoizhing police in Monggar arrested a 23-year-old man for alleged statutory rape, yesterday. The crime was committed at one of the villages in Monggar yesterday afternoon. Sources said the suspect was arrested by the police after the mother of the minor reported the crime to the Gup.

The minor, a seven-year-old girl, is a student in one of the schools in Monggar. Police said the suspect is her neighbour.

As per the Penal Code of Bhutan, the offence of statutory rape is a felony of the first degree with a prison term of fifteen years to life.
