About 12 million litres of alcohol were imported in the country last year alone, according to the study carried out by the Bhutan Centre for Studies (CBS). The alcohol consumption pattern shows that 42 percent of the population drinks alcohol. Of that, 33 percent constitute female population.
The Army Welfare Project produced 6.2 million litres of alcohol, last year alone. This according the study shows that, it is equivalent to one bottle per person for a population of six million people.
The President of the CBS, Dasho Karma Ura, said despite tax measures, the consumption of alcohol is increasing every year.
In 2008, 11 million litres of foreign alcohol was imported in the country. While in 2009, the import increased by another one million litres.
The study also shows that the revenue generated from the sale of alcohol was Nu.726 million. The government has spent Nu.16 million for treating alcohol related diseases.
The study also revealed Pemagatshel as the highest alcohol consuming Dzongkhag with 5,000 out of 9,100 population into drinking.
