From Chipeon to the Dzongkhag Tshogdu chairperson, Jarey Gup-elect Kinzang Minjur served the gewog for over two decades. He has served Jarey Gewog in Lhuentse as Gup for the last 14 years, making him the longest-serving gup in the district. He won the recent local government election by 191 votes.

The 48-year-old Gup-elect served as Jarey Gup since 2007. He was the Chairperson of the Dzongkhag Tshogdu from 2011.

Before being elected as gup, Kinzang Minjur served in other positions such as Chipeon, Tshogpa and instructor for a Non-formal Education in the gewog.

He said the responsibility of Gup has slowly changed over time.

“With modern technologies, working has become more comfortable and taking up responsibilities these days has become much easier. However, changing time has brought in many rules and laws affecting the service delivery,” he said.

He added that nowadays there are more responsibilities to uphold but with it, the rewards are equally satisfying.

Although Kinzang Minjur was deprived of basic education, he learned reading and writing from his brother.

“I would take books with me while I went for daily work and even while sleeping, my book would always be with me. I had a great interest in learning from a very young age,” he said.

The father of five children loves carpentry, watching the news on television, listening to the radio and also reading news in various newspapers.

While he looks forward to serving the gewog again this time, he said he is unsure of what the future holds for him.

Jarey Gewog is some 56 kilometres from the Lhuentse Dzongkhag Administration.
