Unlike the past years, not a single case of Malaria has been reported in Phuentsholing General Hospital. About 42 cases were reported last year. The hospital administration said sensitisation programmes and people adopting preventive measures like mosquito nets and repellents have helped reduce Malaria in Phuentsholing.

“We carry out indoor residual spray twice a year. And at times when there is need, we also do the fogging and additional spray including the impregnation of bed nets,” said the Phuentsholing General Hospital’s Administration officer, Namgyal Dorjee.

The hospital is continuing a routine check up for people with symptoms similar to that of Malaria.

Last year, Malaria cases were reported even in December.

For the increasing number of fever cases, the hospital officials said, it is more of viral and bacterial infection fever. But for severe cases, samples are being tested for Malaria, dengue fever and Chikungunya, the most recent viral out-break. Of nine samples for Chikungunya, six had tested positive.

The hospital these days sees about 90-100 fever cases every day.
