Celebrating International Mountain Day, students from the College of Natural Resources, Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law and schools in Thimphu presented the Bhutan Youth Declaration on Climate Action to the government today. The students drafted the declaration last month in Punakha.

The declaration reflects each student’s commitment to be agents of change in realizing the country’s vision of becoming a Zero Waste Society by 2030. They pledged and called on everyone to replace single-use plastics with biodegradable alternatives by 2023.

Among other commitments, the students also pledged to be trustees of the country’s natural resources and the environment by devoting their creativity, energy, passion, and expertise to climate action. Their declaration will be used in national and international conferences in the future to call on policymakers to bring changes in climate change mitigation plans and policy.
