The highways and byways within the Gelegphu core town area are poorly lit. Lamp posts seen erected along the road are not functioning properly. The stretch from Gelegphu border gate till the main junction is the worst. The glass covering of the lamps are damaged by seeping rain water making it black.
People say such area could serve as an idle place for young people to indulge in illegal activities at night. “It is scary to walk alone during night time as there is no proper lighting along the streets. Gangfights are becoming common in this area,” said a Gelegphu resident, Nar Bahadur Kami.
It is not only risky for the pedestrian to walk at night, the taxi drivers, also fear commuting at odd hours. “We come across all types of passangers,” said a taxi driver, Jigme Choeda.
Similarly, the trees and overgrown branches along the roadside makes the street even more unfriendly.
The matter was also discussed during the recent Thromde Meeting. The participants of the meeting were informed that all the necessary equipment have been procured. The Thromde office will be fixing the street lights and cutting the overgrown trees along the highway soon to ensure the public’s safety.
