Six people have tested positive for Chikungunya in Samste.  Samtse hospital has admitted two more suspected cases of Chikungunya yesterday. The patients are still under observation.

A minimum of 100 people visit Samste hospital everyday to get tested for the disease. Chikungunya is an insect borne virus that is transmitted to human by virus carrying mosquitoes. It causes an illness with symptoms similar to Dengue fever.

Dr.PM Pradhan said people suffering from Chikungunya will experience high fever, headache, joint pain, body ache. Rashes will also appear all over the body.

“There is no need to panic,” said the doctor. He said though it is viral infection it is preventive. “Avoid contact with mosquities and keep the surroundings clean.”

He also advises people to use long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets.

Meanwhile, the health officials in Samtse are conducting awareness campaign on Chikungunya.  They are visiting people’s home to raise awareness on the disease. Indoor residual spray and thermal fogging are also being done.
