Almost every former gup in Sarpang’s 12 gewogs made it through the selection procedure. 10 of them will be contesting for the upcoming local government election along with 26 other aspiring gups.

Except Chhuzergang gup, all former gups in Sarpang contested during the selection procedure.

Chhuzergang Gup Sangay Tshering said he wanted to let the younger generations take the opportunity this time. He served as the gewog’s gup for three consecutive terms for the last one and a half decade. “There are many candidates vying for the post. I would like to acknowledge them for coming forward to represent us all. It is in the hands of people to make a choice. From my past experience, I have seen that some candidates cannot accept defeat. I would advise everyone to respect people’s choice.”

Despite being the lone contestant from Dangling chiwog, the former Umling Gup did not get elected during the Dhamngoi Zomdu by one vote. His opponent was disqualified for having affiliation with a political party. Two aspiring gups are female from Gelephu and Serzhong gewogs.

Sarpang also nominated 38 Mangmi candidates during the selection procedure of which four are female.

The nominated candidates have started filing their nominations to the office of the Returning Officer. The final day for filing nomination is on Monday.
