Considered an art of self-expression and creativity, Graffiti, scribbling pictures on walls, buildings and signboards, have recently become a common sight in and around Thimphu city. The signboards of Royal Thimphu College and Phelkhil Higher Secondary School in Thimphu were covered with graffiti when BBS visited the area recently.

The outer structure of one of the buildings near the clock tower square and near the Thimphu city gate in Babesa were also scribbled with arts.

Though it may be an expression of artistic skills for those who love art, for the casual onlookers it is not a pleasant sight.

According to some of the schools in Thimphu, they had to repaint their school infrastructures after a graffiti sort of art was scribbled on it.

Thromde officials say there are no laws or rules with regard to graffiti. But the Royal Bhutan Police says if the art conveys defamatory messages about individual’s personality, then it will be considered as defamation.
