Happy with the choice made

Some 150 households moved to Seng-Gey Gewog in Sarpang as part of resettlement programme six years ago. They left their ancestral homes in Bumthang, Trashiyangtse and Zhemgang. Then, the people were skeptical about their future, in a new place among new people. But, today they said they are happy with the choice they made.

Some people faced a lot of difficulties initially and did not like the place at all. Things started changing slowly after the Gewog got access to all the basic facilities like the road, electricity, hospital, safe drinking water, mobile connection and school. “As the year passes by, all the problems are also solved gradually,” said Sherab Choden.

“I am so happy here. We have access to road, electricity. Next time I will install TV,” said another local resident Tshewang Dema.

The land in the Gewog is also fertile because of which all kinds of crops and fruits grow. People said the Gewog has all the basic facilities in place. All they need now is a community Chorten or a Lhakhang. The need is felt very strongly especially during illness and death.

The community school is also upgraded till class IV recently. Until the mid-term the school had only classes till third standard. Fifteen older students from class III were given fast track promotion and sent to class four based on their mid-term examination result. However, the problem is teacher shortage, with only four teachers including a contract teacher.

The school was started in 2010.
