The ground-breaking ceremony for the Tsendrong UN Garden was held today. The Garden is a gift from His Majesty The King and is dedicated to the 50th Anniversary of Bhutan’s Membership in the United Nations. Work to develop the garden will begin early next year.
The Tsendrong UN Garden will be developed on about 1.2 acres of land at Kawajangsa in Thimphu. It will be a green recreational space, a part of a larger network of parks, green spaces and gardens in the capital.
According to the Coordinator of the Tsendrong UN Garden, Tenzin Dhendup, the garden will be a special all-encompassing garden.
“We will have a visitor centre with both visual and audio introduction to the park. We are developing lots of ideas. So, I think this park will be a wonderful present to both Bhutanese and all international visitors.”
The Resident Coordinator of the UN Bhutan, Gerald Daly, thanked His Majesty for the “incredible gift”. “It’s going to be even more important that it inspires us to raise our game, work harder on behalf of the people of this country,” he added.
Bhutan formally became the 128th member of the UN in 1971. Since then, the partnership between the UN and Bhutan has grown with collaborations expanding into a different range of fields contributing to Bhutan’s development goals.
