Football lovers in Samdrup Jongkhar are waiting for the thromde to install floodlights at the public football ground. The ground remains empty most of the time during the day because of the scorching heat. The public ground was laid with artificial turf in 2018.

Currently, a departmental football tournament is underway in Samdrup Jongkhar. Without an option to play at night, the matches are played in the afternoon and evening. The matches scheduled for the evening ended up playing in the darkness as the days started getting shorter.

“It is inconvenient to play during the day because of the heat. However, lighting will be soon installed as the thromde has awarded the contract last time,” said Norbu Zangpo, the Tournament Organizer.

“Samdrup Jongkhar is a hot place and the heat is still the same at this time too. It is very difficult to play during the day. We will be grateful if the lighting facility is installed so that we can play during the night,” added Ngawang Chophel, a footballer in Samdrup Jongkhar.

According to Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde Administration, work to install floodlights was awarded to the contractor in April and was supposed to complete by last month. However, due to the COVID situation, the thromde has given a time extension until 14th December this year.

About Nu 7 M is funded by the Bhutan Olympic Committee for lighting the football ground in Samdrup Jongkhar.
