Narphung town grapples with water shortage

Getting a reliable and adequate drinking water is a struggle for the residents of Narphung town in Samdrup Jongkhar. They have been putting up with the water shortage for more than five years. Narphung town is located almost 60 kilometres from Samdrup Jongkhar town.

People have been storing water in buckets and containers. And it has been a ritual for about fifteen households. They said the water source is small and is not enough.

The Gomdar Gewog administration constructed the water source in 2015 for the Narphung residents. But no maintenance was carried out since then.

“It’s a struggle for all of us as we have more households. The government supplied water but it isn’t enough,” said Tshewang Phuntsho, a resident of Narphung town.

“We get water for only for two hours a day,” said Tsheltrim Dorji, another resident.

However, the dzongkhag administration plans to supply adequate water under the rural water supply scheme in the next financial year.
