Presenting Bhutan’s Food Systems to the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Lotay Tshering said the pandemic has exposed Bhutan’s vulnerable food systems. However, Lyonchhen said it has also presented an opportunity to do more in attaining food self-sufficiency. The Food System is the process starting from the production of foods until consumption.

The UN Food Systems Summit was held virtually on Thursday. Addressing the summit, the Prime Minister said Bhutan’s aim to achieve food self-sufficiency will depend on how the country adapts to the changing climate and the rigid laws.

“Bhutan is a developing Himalayan nation and the geographical landscape is far from favourable for meaningful agriculture. The human-wildlife conflict and the impacts of climate change are testing the resilience of our crops and the patience of our growers daily. And then we have a tough environment and climate laws. which of course is good in the long run but firm and rigid for the immediate gains.”

However, the prime minister said Bhutan intends to fight on and reform her food systems.

“The pandemic presented a stark reminder that we are an import-driven country and need to do more in terms of food production. Only then we can play an active part in the global food system. But we have a unique opportunity to reform our food systems today. In doing so, we aspire to move from conventional to technology-driven farming and from subsistence to commercial scale.”

The prime minister also said Bhutan commits to progress to health-conscious dietary practices from taste preferences and cultural habits. Lyonchhen added there is a danger that hunger might be the next pandemic if the global leaders don’t come together to help each other in achieving food self-sufficiency.

“Strengthening Food Systems will not just be the biggest complimenting factor to prevent and counter similar pandemics in future but also have a positive impact on climate change. It would enhance the overall quality of living on the planet. And this summit is the perfect platform to initiate the wholesome approach. For Bhutan, we pledge to do our part.”
