Miss Bhutan Pageant back after more than a decade

Once again, the ramp will come to life with glamour. After more than a decade, Miss Bhutan Beauty Pageant is back. This year’s edition of the event is going to be organised in October. And an overwhelming number of participants are readying for the event.

After Miss Bhutan Beauty Pageant crowned Tshokey Tshomo Karchung and Sonam Choden Retty, Miss Bhutan, in 2008 and 2010 respectively, the event went dead silent. But this year, Bhutan could get its third Miss Bhutan. With a huge number of contestants, it could also possibly make selection difficult.

According to the organiser, Karma Tshering, when they first started the event in 2008, they had to force young girls to participate and even ask their parents to encourage them. But today, it is just the perfect opposite. “The moment I advertised the registration, the number of respondents was overwhelming,” he said.

After 2010, the event could not be continued. According to the organiser, the lack of sponsors, and coming up of several other reality shows affected it. Although the situation hasn’t changed much, he said they want to squeeze a little. “Because of the pandemic, most of the companies, especially the tourism and hospitality industry are badly affected. That is why it is very difficult to get sponsors.”

It is also due to the availability of a lot of potential young girls and women in the country today that makes organising the event worthwhile.

“In addition to a lot of young girls in Thimphu, we have so many youth who returned from abroad after the pandemic. I thought this is the right time to engage them into something like Miss Bhutan Beauty Pageant,” Karma Tshering added.

So far, more than 300 individuals have registered. Of it, about 50 will be selected during the audition which is expected to take place early next month. After they select the top 20 contestants, the event will be broadcast on BBS and social media platforms.
