With increasing crimes over the years, the need for a police station has become urgent in Kabisa gewog in Punakha. As per records with the police, the gewog reported more than twenty cases of battery, larceny and burglary among others, so far, this year. The gewog saw only about twenty cases last year.
There are some ten shops including a few bars in Sirigang located along the Punakha-Gasa highway. And it is enough to attract people who mostly come to unwind after work. It is not a problem during the day. But as dusk falls, that is when things turn ugly.
The story is no different at Uesarkha located near the gewog centre.
“As the place is located along the highway, young people come here and get drunk. They then start fighting. A few years ago, a shop was also burgled twice,” said Phub Gyeltshen, a Kabisa resident.
Another resident, Sangchung said “We have not reported serious problems. But there are always fights during local festivals and gatherings. There were also cases of auto stripping in the past.”
The Kabisa gewog administration has been asking for a police outpost since 2017. According to the gup, the gewog has also identified a location. But today, most of the police personnel are on border duty.
“We have already submitted a report to the police headquarters. We planned to send two police personnel on a rotational basis in the locality. We could not do so due to the pandemic. But we will support after the pandemic situation improves,” said Lieutenant Colonel Chador Namgay, the Officer Commanding of Punakha police. A police outpost will also benefit Chhubu gewog.
