The world applauded Bhutan for its exemplary exhibition of unity in the fight against COVID-19. As dangers still loom large, safety protocols such as wearing face masks, washing hands and maintaining distance remains pivotal. And banks in Thimphu have been diligently following the safety protocols, setting example for everyone.

It looks like banks in the capital are never tired of trying. Hordes of people floods banks every day, but the security guards and the Desuups make sure that they are in their right gear to enter. They

“Since the outbreak of the pandemic, we are doing our duty to let the public wash their hands, disinfect their shoes, wear their face masks, screen their temperature and let them use Druk Trace app. And if people don’t have Druk Trace we register them manually. We let people stay in queue so that the banks are not congested inside”,  said Namgay Tshering, a security guard with the Bhutan Development Bank Limited.

And people praise the spirit. The ones BBS spoke to said compared to other places banks in Thimphu are safer.

“At the BOB and most of the banks, before entering we have to wash our hands, use the Druk Trace app and check our temperature. However, inside the bank, it is a little congested. But the banks diligently follow the COVID safety protocols when compared to other places,” said Chogyal Norbu, a resident of Thimphu.

“I have observed that banks are careful, especially adhering to the safety protocols. Likewise, besides banks, if every individual abide by the protocols, then I think we can prevent the virus from spreading,” said Yoenten Dorji, another resident of the capital.

And inside, more than anything, both the staff and clients are careful.

“The Bank of Bhutan has been following the COVID-19 protocols starting from the hand-washing facility at the entrance, the QR scan, maintaining social distance inside the banking hall, and also, we are strictly maintaining the number of customers inside the banking hall,” said Dorji Wangchuk, General Manager of the BoB.

Even as the restrictions ease gradually, it is still not yet time to let our guard down. Instead, it is time to be more careful.

After all, at this point of time, we may have won the battle, but the war against the Coronavirus is far from over.
