Playing volleyball might become much more fun and professional. Soon the volleyball enthusiasts in Thimphu can play the sport on synthetic floored courts. The country will have its first two such courts in Changlimithang ready by end of this month.

The construction work, started in February this year, is in full swing. About 87 per cent of the works are complete.

The flooring also ensures that there is no major impact on knees, feet, shins as well as ankles in case of injury. Once complete, the synthetic flooring will last for about 15 to 20 years.

Today, people use courts in schools and private areas to practice the sport.

“Today, we are playing here at Taba. We heard that the courts will be ready by the end of this month. We are so excited and eagerly waiting to use the facility,” said Kinley Yonten, a volleyball enthusiast.

“As we don’t have proper volleyball courts to practice regularly, we go and practice at Taba and YHSS volleyball courts,” said Choki Gyeltshen, another volleyball enthusiast.

The facility will also have lights to play in the evenings. The Government of India is funding the project worth Nu 12 M.

Woezer Builder, a private company that is executing the contract works, said they will complete the works nine months ahead of the deadline. Initially, the project was scheduled to be complete by the mid of next year.

There will also be a beach court.
