The number of disabled students joining the Draktsho East Centre at Rongthong in Trashigang has been increasing over the years. The Centre was established in 2010 with less than 30 students but the number of student has now doubled.

Our reporter, Chechey, says that though physically and mentally challenged, the students there learn and perform activities like any other ordinary students in their school. The students learn English, Dzongkha and Mathematics. Apart from academic sessions, they also attend classes on weaving, tailoring and painting.

According to one of the instructors, Tshering Lhamo, the number may be increasing since it is difficult for the parents to take care of them. “It is challenging because we even have to take them to the toilet. Sometimes they fight and do not listen to us. And while teaching, some of them take time to catch up.”

The Centre also provides support to the students to be independent in the future.

The Draktsho East Centre was established in April 2010 with less than 30 students.  The Centre also provides boarding facilities to the students.
