Gyalpozhing-Kurizam road needs repair

The road between the Kurizam and the Kurichhu Power Plant in Monggar is not one of the first roads you want to think of when driving along the Gyalpoizhing-Nganglam highway. The road is narrow and filled with potholes. And highlighting the risks due to these conditions, the daily commuters want the road widened and blacktopped.

This eight-kilometre stretch is a busy road. Scores of vehicles have been driving through it since the Gyalposhing-Nanglam highway opened to traffic in 2018. And now, the road needs repair.

“I have even seen some light vehicles break down along the highway. It has been quite a while since the road developed several potholes. Moreover, the road is narrow for two vehicles to pass through. So, the road needs to be widened as well. But for now, it would be better to fix the potholes,” said Ugyen Wangchuk, a taxi driver.

“It is risky while giving way. We have to keep one of the tyres next to the drain or the cliff,” adds Dargay, another driver.

The regional office of the roads department in Monggar did not prioritize the road’s maintenance earlier as it was in good condition. However, this time, the office received Nu 10 M for its resurfacing. It is expected to start next month.

“It is an important highway. And this time, we have the budget to maintain it as well. We are also hopeful of widening the stretch in the next Plan,” said Kinzang Dorji, DoR’s chief engineer in Lingmethang.

The office has already proposed a budget for the widening works. This means it will not be long before the commuters enjoy a smooth and safe ride between the Kurizam and the Kurichhu Power Plant.
