As a result of ethnic violence in Assam, an Indian state, vehicles plying to and from Phuentsholing, Gelephu and Samdrup Jongkhar were stranded in Gauripur, Dubri District, under Assam. It was reported that the glasses and windshield of three vehicles were broken. However, no major damages and casualties have been reported.
The Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs and Royal Bhutan Police have been closely coordinating with Indian counterparts and all Bhutanese people and vehicles have been escorted to Bhutan safely.
In view of the security situation in Assam, MoHCA and RBP have advised the general public to avoid travelling through Assam.
All Dzongkhag Administrations and Royal Bhutan Police of Southern Dzongkhags have been alerted and travel through the state of Assam has been stopped until further notice.
According to BBC, Security forces in India’s Assam state have been given “shoot on sight” orders amid violence that has killed at least 21 people.
The move follows fierce fighting between indigenous tribespeople and Muslim settlers in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts.
More than 60,000 people have fled their homes for relief camps.
