The Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) is aligning programmes in various colleges to the need of job markets in the country. Starting this year, the RUB discontinued three programmes in different colleges after the courses were found irrelevant to the job market.

The RUB discontinued Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Bhutanese and Himalayan Studies at the College of Language and Culture Studies, Taktse, BA Social Work at the Samtse College of Education (SCE), and BA English and Dzongkha at the Sherubtse College.

According to the RUB, the university has been getting feedback that the graduates of these programmes are not accepted anywhere. They do not even fulfil the subject requirements for Post Graduate Diploma in Education programme in SCE. Hence, the Royal Civil Service Commission does not accept graduates from these programmes.

An official with the RUB said more than 60 per cent of the graduates from these courses are still unemployed.

In the meantime, the university introduced three new programmes, which will provide skills that have high market demand.

The RUB started Bachelor of Science in Data Science, and Statistics in Sherubtse College and BA in Dzongkha and Culture Studies in College of Language and Culture Studies.
