In the wake of rupee crunch, the government has already started boosting vegetable farming in the country to meet its domestic demand. Working along this line is a gewog in Chhukha Dzongkhag where vegetable production in a larger scale is gaining momentum.
A group of farmers in Darla Gewog has been experimenting and cultivating vegetables for the past three years. They produced vegetables just enough to meet their own and the locality’s demands. The surplus yield was sold mostly at the Army camp near their village. But when the cultivation season begins in August, they will be increasing their production.
“Vegetables imported from Jaigaon are expensive. But if we grow vegetables here and supply it to the market, it will be a little cheaper for the customers ,” said one of the farmers.

The Renewable Natural Resource Extension Centre in the gewog has supplied them with seeds and materials to construct vegetable sheds.
In Tabji, another village under the gewog, people have bartered vegetable production for a farm road. A three kilometer road has been constructed with the condition that farmers in the village will increase their vegetable yield and supply them to the domestic markets.
The villagers however added that another five kilometer road still needs to be constructed to link their main village to the highway.
Meanwhile, the gewog officials said similar plans in other villages of the gewog are also being implemented.
