Would you ever think of turning on the radio for COVID-19 information or use it to communicate with people in your village about your culture? Well, that’s exactly what people of Dechhen Pelri in Sarpang do.

In a time when the world is relying on Facebook and Instagram for information, people of Dechhen Pelri tune in to Edi Community Radio Station for information. Besides local music and chatter, the two-hour evening program on Edi Community Radio Station educates the people on COVID-19 and motivates them to practice safety protocols.

The radio station was established in 2016.

Since then, it has become an instrument to engage and educate the people. The radio programmes reflect the local needs and encourage conversations on traditions and culture. Amid the pandemic, the radio is currently helping the people fight Coronavirus in an informed way.

“Small radio station is of immense benefit during COVID pandemic. People are informed on the importance of washing hands and putting on a mask. We also have programs on child protection and air other school entertainment programs,” said Namgay, Field Coordinator with the Tarayana Foundation.

“It has been many years since the establishment of Community Radio Station. We get information and announcement through community Radio,” added Karma Thinley, a resident of Dechhen Pelri.

The radio is broadcast in Dzongkha and Khengkha. It has made disseminating information easier. In the past, local leaders had to visit every household to convey a message.

“We are grateful for Her Majesty the Queen Mother. The radio station has immensely benefited us. We can now disseminate any information or announcements we receive from the gewog and dzongkhag through radio,” said Karma Tenzin from Dechhen Pelri.

Tarayana Foundation handed over the radio station to the community people last week. It will now be manned by people in the community.
