To celebrate and recognise an individual’s creative work, the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Economic Affairs, for the first time, conducted the National Copyright Award today. However, only one individual participated in the competition.

According to the Department of Intellectual Property, they have already informed and advertised about the competition but only one came forward. The lone participant, Tandin Dorji was awarded the National Copyright Award in recognition of his musical works. The awardee, who is a music producer and a composer, won for his song titled Sha Dha Thra and other musical works.

“I am very happy that I won the award. Through intellectual and creativity, we can have a lot of opportunities. They don’t have to stick to academics only and opt for government jobs. We can compose songs and write books if we make use of our creativity. And we are grateful for the government’s support and recognition every time,” said Tandin Dorji.

“What we aim to do with this national award, is to increase their appreciation for the creative sector as well as provide a platform for our artists and creators to be recognized for their contribution to society. For a small country like ours, I think the creative sector if used properly would assert our independence, would define our culture. As well as I think to promote recognition of our identity not only regionally but also globally,” said Kinley Tenzin Wangchuk, the Director-General of the Department of Intellectual Property.

The National Copyright Award function will be celebrated annually to gather more aspiring participants in the creative industry.
